The special model “G350d Professional” of the G-Class, introduced in 2016, was a limited edition of only 463 units of the vehicle model. The vehicle, specially designed for off-road use, impressed with its special off-road capabilities and extremely robust construction. Depending on its orientation, an easy-to-use infotainment system should be integrated into this car. Further requirements: A largely technical and visual integration into the existing cockpit of the G-Class including multimedia functionality, CAN connection and adaptation to the existing antenna technology.
The infotainment system already developed for the Mercedes Citan served as the basis. It includes a state-of-the-art FM dual tuner and digital radio (DAB+) as well as touch-enabled full-screen navigation on a 3.5-inch screen with TMC Pro. In addition, the connection of the steering wheel remote control via the vehicle’s CAN bus was developed. The system received global certification and was also certified as “Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad”. The development took place in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz, and delivery went directly to the Magna company in Graz, where the G-Class was produced. The system was available with and without a navigation system.
The system has DAB+ and AM/FM radio, so you can enjoy brilliant radio reception with a wide selection of stations. The stereo sound with 4x 45 watts ensures an impressive sound experience that fills your vehicle with rich sound.
Thanks to previous development for Mercedes commercial vehicles (first generation Citan), we were able to use the existing infotainment platform. The system was integrated into a classic 1-DIN slot in the special model of the G-Class.
A central task in the development of this system was the connection to the vehicle’s CAN bus system. The integration of the steering wheel remote control was implemented as well as the transmission of telephone and navigation data to the vehicle’s multifunction display.
A navigation system is integrated that offers the driver access to high-resolution maps and real-time traffic information. The intuitive user interface is supported by a high-resolution 3.5-inch color display with touchscreen function, ensuring easy and comfortable operation.
